Hello everyone! So recently I tried making my first half life 2 beta map, but it didn’t go so well. Whenever I hit compile, hl2.exe (the leaknet one) would simply not run. It would be much appreciated if someone could help me on this matter.

If I recall correctly, it is recommended to use Hammer from original unmodified anon-hl2 for mapping and compiling the maps, the reason is that LeakNet Hammer is quite unstable.

Do you mean the actual beta that comes with retail?

In my experience the Leaknet hammer works just fine, at the very least it's as good as untouched Hammer, but likely more stable.

And the game isn't supposed to run when you hit "compile". Compiling launches the tools which are their own separate exe files. Then you can manually start the game and check... overall there's this guide.

And you can even use this third-party tool to compile outside of hammer, once you're done building the map that is.

I see that you are very new to the beta community and/or have a very basic understanding of the Source engine and Hammer. Let's start from the basics: Download the Half-Life 2 Beta Leak. I recommend the Mega Build as it has everything you need [Keep in mind that you'll need a program that is able to mount ISO files like Daemon Tools]. After the installation run the beta at least once and after that follow this guide very carefully. After that it should be smooth sailing from there. Hopefully I helped somehow.

So I think I've gotten everything (Configured hammer, built a map) But I still am unable to compile a map. I've tried clicking on the .vmf of my map (Just goes to hl2.exe without my map) tried converting it into a .bsp (Doesn't get scanned and unable to load in console). Can someone help me with playing a compiled map?

Don't double click the VMF file, you should instead run Hammer, open the VMF file in Hammer, press F9 and hit OK. Then, run the beta, open the console and finally type:
Code: [Select]
map name_of_the_vmf_file

    • Oh look I'm a special person who has a YouTube account
Compiling maps within leak's hammer is very inconsistant and unreliable, use this instead: https://hl2-beta.ru/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=267 . I use it when I make maps for the leak since the F9 compile does not function properly for me.

You can just use a .bat-file. No need in over-engineering.
