Rollerbuddys I am quite sure are just an early version of what we got in ep1, with alyx using the reused idea for the rollerwand to control them. The rest are most likely just states to switch to when in certain sequences, isnt there a part wher rollermines  burst through a barricade? those I would imagine would be the cut npcs, which would in every other way be the same as the normal ones, but fun to speculate anyway

Yep, going by the dates of the sounds and references in the files (I wrote the vcc article on them) many of them were separate variations using the same locomotion for different tasks, which later was consolidated into a single entity as the rollermine.

Going through the code it appears that the rollerbull was the direct predacessor to the current behaviour of the retail rollermine, with the original behavior of the "mine" variant lost to time apart from the sounds that match the naming and folder conventions of the other variants and perhaps the "hide in ground" and "explode" parts.

The interesting thing about the rollerbull is the leftovers for an incomplete behaviour that would cause an entire squad to explode at the same time when near an enemy, this is strange since its on the rollerbull so it could be that it was left there before moving it to the new rollermine variant. Interestingly enough there are indeed leftovers for a more complete variant of that specific behaviour on the rollermine through the chirp sound events.
