So I was browsing the Valve Archive, and I came across some very interesting images.

To me, this shows several interesting things.
  • All viewmodels weren't team-colored.
  • Soldier had a different model.
  • Grenades originally used the Rocket model.
  • Originally, the Flamethrower was visually identical to the Gluon Gun.
  • The Tranquilizer was unsilenced.
  • The Nailgun was visually identical to the Submachine Gun.
  • ...and the Sentries and Dispenser were themed closer to Half-Life's HECU Sentry.
What do you make of this?

That soldier looks better than the final model

I'm guessing they were made for Half-Life: Team Fortress/ Valve's Team Fortress, with the intent of using them in TFC also, but then they remade it for unknown reasons.
Also something I just noticed, the Flamethrower uses the Shotgun Shell ammo icon.

That soldier looks better than the final model

Personal preference in my opinion, I like it quite a bit, but I still prefer retail TFC Soldier.

Those turrets look really out of place. I'm glad they changed it!

They mustve still worked on models, maybe lower priority than other stuff. It's cool and i'm glad i saw this. Thx, sandvich!

No problem!
I also noticed some more discrepancies by the way, such as:
  • A different Sniper Rifle Worldmodel
  • Incomplete thirdperson animations.
  • The wrench using the Crowbar's model.
  • ...and the Soldier was presumably meant to have a pistol of somesort.
The last point, however, should be taken with a grain of salt as the perspective is skewed slightly.

i'm pretty sure those guns are just placeholders, that explains why the flamethower uses a shotgun shell.

but the rest seems pretty cool, specially the sentry and dispenser.

i doubt they were placeholders as the quake team fortress viewmodels weren't team coloured
also the flamethrower is still modelled over the gluon gun
the p_model is still called p_egon
