How to compile leaked source code of CSS 2003 Pre-Alpha?

I noticed that the hl2 beta source code also had the source code for the CSS pre alpha. I tried to compile it, but the binaries it makes don't work (crashes on the grey Loading screen). The binaries are also dated 24th of September 2002 for some reason. Am I doing something wrong or is the code provided in that hl2 source code archive broken?

I have seen it working, but it's not really anything to write home about, any explosion's or looking at a bullet funny will crash the game, I'm not one to give up on engines that quickly, I've been repairing my own version of the 2003 leak myself without outside help, but CSS Pre Alpha seems not worth the hassle.
