This is a small guide aiming to help you solve some issues you may encounter trying to run the HL2 Beta Mega Build 2024 on Linux using Wine/Proton

Important: If you have already tried different version of Wine, I'd recommend restarting with a clean Wine prefix.

1. Error about "isskinu.dll" when trying to run the installer
Run this command in your Wine prefix:
Code: [Select]
winetricks vcrun6sp6
For example, if you're running the installer in a Wine prefix at ~/Games/hl2beta, that would be
Code: [Select]
WINEPREFIX=~/Games/hl2beta winetricks vcrun6sp6
This will install Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 which is required to run the installer properly.

(Thanks to some random 10 year old forum post on Wine's forums for that solution...)

2. Game starts with black / transparent screen, but the sounds of the main menu buttons can be heard when moving the mouse
Running the game using GE-Proton worked for me. I used version 9-20.

3. Game window appears with black / transparent screen, uses up entire RAM and crashes
Disabling DXVK worked for me. It's enabled by default when using Lutris, but you can easily disable it in the Runner options tab.
I'm not sure why DXVK does not work properly for me. I've already tried older versions as well as the latest build from GitHub, but neither worked for me. It may be related to my graphics driver.

The Internet is full of guides on how to use proton outside of Steam
