advice on how to make a hl2 mod?

Im thinking of making a hl2 ep3 / hl3 mod using hl2 ep2 as astarting point. I have made a discord server but i have little experince mapping in hammer++  so i have made 2 crappy background maps as they are easy to make. I know the source sdk is broken but im using it for my mod. Is it ok to do so or still broken? If so please tell me the proper (and probably hard) way to setup a mod. thank you for reading this forum post. i am new to the hl2 beta and modding itself but i would love the help and support you would all give me. cya
