Thanks! I made a script that helps me compile. here it is if anyone needs it. It seems to work.

"D:\anon-hl2\bin\studiomdl.exe" -dumpmaterials -game "D:\anon-hl2\joompy" -nop4 -nox360 %1

more of a question. is it possible to port retail hl2 models into the hl2 beta?
i wanted to use some 2002 model remakes to make it more "accurate"
but when i try to put them into the game it crashes.
any fixes?

Moved your question to a proper thread.
As for the question itself - all I know is that you need to use the unpatched leak's studiomdl, Currently LeakNet's studiomdl makes the compiled model crash the game.

Allow me to add to this:
Leaknet 2.0's studiomdl seems to work much better than 1.0's, as well as the original studiomdl. I recommend using that for compiling models.
As far as complex character models go, you need working decompiled animation sets for each model you're planning to use, as $compilemdl is not in leaknet. Flexes require the "split" command, as there is no "flexpair" command in leak studiomdl either. Animation matrix stuff also tends not to work, and Inverse Kinematics (ik chains) are very weird, usually not working either. To summarize, anything other than basic static props will be difficult to compile. Once the new megapatch is out, I hope we'll get some better tools and tutorials out for the public to use, such as a proper flex file and working animation libraries.

first of all. i'm dumb as bricks and i don't understand coding. it took me forever to port ONE model to portal 2, it would probably take me a while to port like... 2 models
so, i was wondering if there's an easier way to port models?

I decompiled a Sven-Coop playermodel and managed to mostly get it to compile, although the materials refuse to work. Maybe I'll figure out the problem after I sleep, not sure, although I can't think of anything left to try. It might be better to try some source models instead of goldsrc, but they're all usually too complicated for the beta's studiomdl, and at least this one actually managed to compile.  :)

(yeah this is kind of a blogpost, but I have no idea what I'm doing so i'm a bit proud of myself for managing to get so far)

Does anyone know why when I compile a model everything seems to go well, but when I try to find the compiled model it just isn't there no matter where I look?

I've found out it's always a couple things last second that stop it from working; Like on the hl2_2001 gman model for example. If anyone knows what I can do about this that would be great.
