bug with 2004 counter-strike beta

everytime i boot up the cs:s beta (2004) it give's me this "unable to set mode" error
i've tried deleting and reinstalling the files. doesn't do anything
is there any fix?

you need to change the aspect ratio to something else to fix it

can you possibly give me a little guide to perhaps fix this, cause i tried changing the resolution to 1920x1080. 1600x800. 800x600, and nothing fixed it
