I've been told that the "free tvs" map is the first, but then I remember seeing maps in the map pack that are older than "free tvs". Then I've been told a certain hyperborea map was created in 1999-2000. So, which one is the first then?

it is unknown since the maps in the wc mapppack are only a portion of what was in development, i believe it is Hyper_001 in the liblist of the leak.

city_test(2000-2002) was made to demonstrate the new technological advancements with the new Source engine, i believe the hyperborea (1999-2000??) map was just a basic brush map with simple elements.

I guess in some ways it depends on what you count as "Half-Life 2." Most people say City_Test was the first Half-Life 2 map, and in some ways, it was kind of like that. It was probably one of the first levels made in the New York Style Old Storyline Half-Life 2. However, even before old storyline, there was also Hyper era, and, although it's been stated that there are no original Hyper maps in the WC Map pack, it is mostly agreed upon that demo_arctic was most likely originally a Hyper map that was later changed when Half-Life 2 was switching development from goldsrc to source, as it exhibits a lot of features that are seen in both goldsrc and source, and a lot of people theorize that it was used in Hyper era and later reused as a demo to show the aspects of Source (stuff like displacements, etc.) Nov_Borealis or whatever it was called is also a close candidate. It was obviously a hyper-era esque map, but it was after Hyper era. So in terms of what we have, City_test was the first true Half-Life 2 map, Demo_arctic is most likely the earliest reused Hyper map, and Hyper_001 is the earlist map to have ever been made (which we never got, unfortunately)

What about c1a3a_port and cavetest? they are made around when city_test03 was made.

c1a3a_port was made by a different level designer and not Aaron

Why do you ask this question here in a thread about the first HL2 map?
There's a thread about all kinds of technical questions you can encounter upon launching HL2 beta.

Also, I have a theory that the zombie town maps are part of quarrytown.
Then again. This is just my fun thought.

Probably some test map for the arctic. Maybe for characters too. The earliest storyline wast that Freeman would travel to different xen infested places and kill all the xen aliens on them. The earliest level could have been one of those levels.
