You can load all the retail maps that dont have embedded textures in the alpha if you change their version number and this only works in software rendering
Though the maps will have bizarre textures
Also in software rendering mode on the alpha, skies are weird even with embedded texture maps

Proof it works
It seems to be random each time.
Quake maps also work with textures that are still glitched but they can actually be slightly recognizable unlike this.

There's no embedded texture so the engine craps itself, just a Quake leftover as it also uses embedded textures. Afaik there's not much difference between alpha's BSP29 and GoldSRC's BSP30 format, they just shuffled headers around.
If panthers are part of the cat family, are panthereyes part of it aswell?

It does seem weird that it would ONLY work in software mode yet break in opengl
Likely the OpenGL mode texture filtering crapping itself and crashing the game
This also happens on a skybox in software rendering regardless if there are embedded textures or not
