Why do Russians like the Half-Life 2 "beta" so much?

I love Russians and I love Half-Life 2, but I wonder why cut/unused Half-Life 2 content seems to attract Russians more than other ethnic groups. It wasn't developed there. Was it sold on the black market there? Was it widespread on download networks? Or are there simply no reasons? This is something I have always wondered.

I wouldn’t say the cut HL assets attract more russians than any other ethnic group. Russians love Half-Life in general, and HL2 especially, because post-apocalypse games are very popular here plus HL2 takes place in Eastern Europe. But same about people from all around the world. Maybe we’re kind of better organized (but not anymore, sadly) and we have our little community that lives more than 10 years, while every other cut content communities, like Gabe’s love tub, Father Grigory’s forums and AGnMI had died during that time.

I'd say the lack of a big mod project that's led by a jackass was the reason this site lasted as long as it did.

Also, Russians are mad about STALKER prototypes too, so it's more of a result of them being fans of the game in the first place than only being interested in the prototypes themselves.

It's all matter of preference, I think. The games have similarities but there's a lot of differences in atmosphere and such.  I think the beta of Half-Life 2 has a much more atmosphere to Half-Life 1, so maybe that's why people like looking into the beta so much, to bring back that feeling. The games have great enough differences where you could dislike one of them and like the other.

That being said, though, I think it's good that there's so many passionate fans, no matter where they actually live or their ethnicity or whatever. I'd like to think the series brings together people with a common interest.
