Hi all,

This thread is intended to be an area of the forum where you can ask mapping questions.

Before asking mapping-related questions, you will want to take a look at the Source SDK Wiki, wich fan be found by clicking here.

Beginners should also watch this tutorial by 3kliksphillip, which is intended for CSGO mappers but almost all of the concepts apply to Half-Life 2.

If you are looking to fix Beta maps, you should consult the "How to fix beta maps" thread, which covers the basic issues relating to Beta maps.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask them here!

i've finished making a map, which is the opening to hl2 (circa. 1999) and the arctic segment is pretty huge, VVIS takes hours because theres so much water, but i cant remove it because its important to the map and its layout,  help please?

Really your best bet would either be to just  bring down the amount of hammer units taken up by the water or just being patient. Compiling usually takes a while with hammer proportionate to how large the map is from my experience, so that'll be a factor that plays into it.

heres the vmf if you wanna check out what could be trimmed down, still in a rough stage too

(it looks blocky to fit the more super old mapping style, and the skybox is permenant, it fits the map) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xXlH49mox1BbS6QBqwaNg0_iwAXNo8H-/view?usp=drive_open

Took a look at the map, honestly there is a whoooole lot of water, trust me when I say it'd be easier for you to shrink the map down a bit or just replace most of the water with some arctic snowy landscape.

Hey all. Ive been mapping on the beyta for a while and ive been having these two bugs that keep plaguing me again and again.
1. Lighting NEVER compiles on my maps and its always mat_fullbright 1 !special
2. Some textures randomly go missing and sometimes I have to cover them with another brush hoping it works
Ive even replaced the missing texture-texture itself with just the color black because of how unbearable and annoying it is o - o  !dead
